Corrugated Plate Interceptors (CPI)
As member of the family of inlet devices that VME manufactures and provides for its customers, these devices introduce the liquids and gases into a pressure vessel in a manner that separates the bulk gas from the liquid and eliminates or significantly reduces the development of foam in the vessel. It can be used to aid the oil and water separation also through the cyclonic action in the tubes.
The Process
As the fluids (typically a mixture of oil, water and gas) pass through the inlet pipe and nozzle the flow is split into two or more cyclone tubes by regularly spaced tube openings. These then direct the flow of fluids tangentially in the tubes encouraging the liquids to flow to the tube walls while the gas stays in the center and so forms a vortex shape. The gas flows out of the top of the tube and the liquid out of the bottom. The fluids velocities are decreased and the bulk of gas and liquids separate. These perform well from medium to high momentum values.
Multi-Vane Inlet Devices
As member of the family of inlet devices that VME manufactures and provides for its customers, this device introduces the liquids and gases into a pressure vessel in a more gentle manner than the standard splash baffle or vane diffuser style of inlet device. These latter styles can be supplied by VME but are typically part of the vessel fabricator supply.
The process
As the fluids (typically a mixture of oil, water and gas) pass through the inlet pipe and nozzle, the flow is split into a number of streams by vanes which are regularly spaced. These then direct the flow of fluids perpendicularly to the inlet flow direction. The fluids velocity is decreased and the bulk of gas and liquids separate. It performs well from low to modest momentum values. Flows of high momentum values tend to sheer the liquids excessively creating fine droplets.
Vane Mist Eliminators
Vane-type mist eliminators are used for high efficiency separation of liquid from gas and are less susceptible to plugging than mesh-type demisters. VME Fabricators designs and manufactures three different types of vane mist eliminators; the Dynamic PocketTM, Single Pocket and Double Pocket. Since VME custom designs and fabricates each unit, our engineers will select the proper materials, vane spacing, dimensions and configuration to meet your project requirements.
Dynamic Pocket Mist Eliminator
The Dynamic Pocket vane mist eliminator, commonly referred to as a Chevron, Hookless, or pocketless mist extractor can be used in horizontal or vertical flow service. VME's unique design provides a tortuous path of directional hanges using a series of expansions and contractions without the use of rigid or fixed pockets. This design provides the least amount of pressure drop and is ideal to use in fouling service. For vertical flow applications, this design allows the coalesced liquid droplets to fall uninhibited to the liquid phase. If your application calls for removal of viscous liquids or sticky solids, VME's Dynamic Pocket design may be your best choice.
Single Pocket Mist Eliminator
Designed for high liquid loading, VME's Single Pocket vane mist eliminator is a modified version of our high efficiency Dynamic PocketTM design. The Single Pocket vane uses wider plate spacing and incorporates liquid collection pockets. The collection pockets are strategically placed to remove the larger liquid droplets thereby increasing the separation efficiency of smaller droplets. The pockets also minimize re-entrainment in high velocity units.
Double Pocket Mist Eliminator
The Double Pocket cane mist eliminator is used for special treatment applications that require high efficiency separation or foam breakdown. VME's proprietary design incorporates wide plate spacing and a specially formed double pocket. Using the same principle as our Single Pocket design for high liquid loading, the collection pockets are strategically placed to remove the larger liquid droplets thereby increasing the separation efficiency of smaller droplets. The Double Pocket mist extractor is also highly efficient in breaking form.
Vane or impingement type mist eliminators have been effectively utilized in many different industries. In fact, they can be oriented for used in either vertical flow or horizontal flow service depending on the specific application. In vertical flow service, the coalesced and separated liquid migrates counter-current to the gas flow. Then installed for horizontal flow, the vane mist eliminator allows the liquid to settle perpendicular to the bulk gas flow thereby increasing separation efficiency. Since the primary mechanism for droplet removal is by impingement, design velocity and cane configuration is critical to the performance of the unit. A design that is too conservative may not provide enough turbulence to remove smaller droplets while undersizing may cause separated liquid droplets to become re-entrained in the gas. Therefore, mist eliminators should be sized and designed by an experienced engineer. When properly designed, vane-type mist eliminators can remove droplet sized as low as five microns (5 ΅m) in certain applications.
Foam Breakers
Foam can cause sever separation problems in liquid-gas separators requiring long residence times to become resolved. Although this problem is expected in some oil production systems, it requires specifically designed equipment and possibly the use of anti-foam chemicals to maintain acceptable unit operation and to keep vessel sizes practical. VME Fabricators manufactures a proprietary designed double pocket foam breaker that is extremely effective at breaking down foam. When installed in a production separator, VME's foam breakers can improve liquid-gas separation with or without the use of anti-foam chemicals. In one retrofit application, the foam breakers were so effective at breaking down the foam and removing liquid mist that the downstream mist eliminators were removed without compromising unit performance.
The process
VME's proprietary double pocket foam breaker packs are engineered to break foam by thinning the liquid film around the gas bubbles. When foam enters the pack, some of the larger bubbles break immediately. The smaller, more stabilized bubbles travel through the pack until they reach the double pocket area. The bubbles are forced through a much smaller area thereby stretching the bubble and thinning the film surrounding it. Some of the bubbles burst at this location while others flow into the wide channel. This channel causes the thin bubbles to rapidly expand which ultimately ruptures the remaining gas bubbles. The pockets also serve as a liquid drainage channel that can quickly remove the separated aqueous phase.
Foam breakers are typically constructed of stainless steel to reduce the potential for corrosion. Carbon steel and other more exotic alloys can be used if you application requires them.
When combined with a vane-type or centrifugal inlet device, foam generation can be kept to a minimum in new or retrofit applications. Vane-type inlet devices slowly reduce the momentum of the incoming fluid which decreases the amount of foam. Centrifugal inlet devices use the high momentum to help separate the liquid form the gas. VME can fabricate inlet devices designed by your company or we can provide our own special design.
VME's custom designed process internals are engineered and fabricated to minimize downtime in retrofit projects. Is foam generation expected to be a problem? Let VME help solve you next foaming problem using proven foam-breaking internals.
Coalescer Packs
With pressing world environmental demands, VME designed and fabricated its first Corrugated Plate Coalescer (or CPC Pack) in 1985 for the separation of oil from water. The liquid-liquid coalescer was installed on an offshore production platform in the Gulf of Mexico for treatment of produced water. VME's Corrugated Plate Coalescer reduced the oil content in the water from over 1,000 ppm to less than 20 ppm and is still in operation today. Since that time, VME has designed and furnished CPC Packs for over 80 installations; a few of which had capacities in excess of 100,000 BPD. CPC Packs have also been successfully utilized in oily water cleanup with 11° API heavy oil!
Benefits of CPC Packs in New Applications:
Smaller Separators
Improved Separation Efficiency
Higher Safety Margin
Lower Operating Cost
CPC PacksTM can be designed for counter-current or cross flow treatment systems. In either design, droplet migration is enhanced since it only has to rise an inch or two, not several feet. Oil droplets, because of their lower density, rise to the bottom side of the coalescer plate while large diameter solids fall to the top of the plate below. Since the impurities travel perpendicular to the bulk flow, separation of the immiscible liquids continues as the bulk fluid travels though the coalescer pack. Depending on the application, one or more CPC Packs may be necessary to achieve the degree of separation required.
Not only have CPC Packs been successful in oily water separators, they have been used extensively in three-phase production separators in many locations such as the Gulf of Mexico and the Middle East. In bulk oil/water separation, VME's coalescer packs increased water removal 1500% over the original configuration in one application1. In other cases, VME's proprietary internals improved separator efficiencies and decreased demulsifier chemical consumption. Used in new applications, coalescer packs can decrease the size of gravity separators thereby decreasing capital expense and saving valuable plot space.
Since VME Fabricators custom designs all of our products, we can manufacture a CPC Pack to fit into existing production separators, CPI separators, API separators, or skimmer vessels. Using VME's proprietary design software, our experienced engineers can also provide process support in designing new water treatment facilities or separation systems.
CPC Pack can be fabricated from materials such as stainless steel, carbon steel, fiberglass reinforced polyester (FRP) polypropylene, or other material depending upon your specific application. Let VME Fabricators assist you with your next liquid-liquid separation problem.
VME's custom designed process internals are engineered and fabricated to minimize downtime in retrofit projects. Is foam generation expected to be a problem? Let VME help solve you next foaming problem using proven foam-breaking internals.

The Operating Principle
Straining
As raw water enters the unit, it passes thro u g h the tubesheet into the ports of the multiple P o ro - E d g e strainer tubes, causing dirt and debris to collect along the length of the tube. The tubes retain any solids while allowing clean water to pass through the slots and into the strained water chamber where it exits via the outlet.
The strainer operates continually with only a 2 PSIG pressure drop until the filter media are seventy five percent (75%) full of dirt
Unlike other strainer designs, the tubesheet is the reason for the 2 PSIG pressure drop, not the filter media.
As the strainer continues to collect the dirt beyond the 75% full condition, the pressure drop begins to increase.
At 4 PSIG, the strainer goes into backwash mode.
Backwashing
During backwashing the stainless steel backwash assembly rotates along the tubesheet. The seal plate forms a pressure tight connection with the tubesheet permitting each tube to be cleaned one at a time in consecutive ord e r.
Unlike other designs, the Poro-Edge media of the R.P. ADAMS Strainer is separated from the backwash mechanism by a substantial metal tube sheet. This prevents the backwash mechanism from coming into contact with the media and damaging the elements caused by l a rge solids becoming lodged between the media and the backwash arm. In the event of the shear key failing, due to very l a rge solids entering the raw water chamber, the large surface area of the P o ro-Edge media will permit flow to continue, allowing time to correct the p roblem before a loss of flow is encountere d .
The Advantages
Poro-Edge Media & Full Flow Protection
All R.P. ADAMS strainers use Poro-Edge media. The Poro-Edge element is made from continuous trapezoidal wire which is welded to axial stringers at every intersection.
This forms a one-piece screen of amazing strength. The cylindrical wedge-wire media provides the largest effective straining area (dirt-holding capacity) of any automatic water strainer, while operating at a lower average pressure loss. The large open area allows greater efficiency by increasing the time between backwashing. In addition, the media is protected from damage by a large metal tubesheet separating the backwash mechanism and the media.
Available in several levels of separation, Poro-Edge media can safely handle differential pressures up to 200 PSIG, collapse or burst. R.P. ADAMS Automatic Self-Cleaning Strainers have a standard design pressure of 150 PSIG. Higher design pressures, special materials of construction and ASME Code design and stamp are available .
Operating Economics
By design, R . P. ADAMS Po ro - Edge strainers will operate at a clean pressure drop, typically 2 PSIG, until a 75% full condition exists. A lower pressure drop results in power savings and a better ability to handle upset conditions that would blind other strainers.
Space Saving Design for Economical Installation
Available in horizontal or ve rtical configurations, R.P. ADAMS Automatic Self-Cleaning Strainers adopt an efficient design which eliminates unnecessary piping and fittings. In addition, the flexibility of the strainer allows the inlet and outlet nozzles to be located in several different positions, including on the same side, if required .
Two-Year Warranty
All R.P. ADAMS Automatic Self-Cleaning Strainers are backed by a two-year warranty on materials and workmanship.
Element Exchange Program
When the unit has started operation and it becomes clear that the real process data are different from the data at engineering stage, then R.P. Adams will re-design and fabricate new filter elements for free. The only costs that are charged will be the transport costs for exchanging the elements. Note however that this service can only be applied within 2 months after the unit has been put in operation.
While a single basket strainer design may look attractive in capital cost, many customers have discovered that it is more expensive when you consider the TOTAL COST which includes maintenance and operation!
